182 Our New Digs...For Now

This morning we were on the phone quickly with housing trying to figure out what to do. They told us that they had a furnished house that we could stay in until things got worked out. Maintenance said that the house would have to be completely rewired and that could be finished mid-week (um, mid-week is July 4th... think they'll be done then?). The house wouldn't be ready until after 1:00, so we packed up, got lunch and tried to kill time until it was ready.
Finally we got an address and met the woman at the house. While grateful to have it, it is not home. It is as old as ours with all the charm of an ancient dirty house and none of the carpet. I really shouldn't complain, but at this point, I am tired and cranky and I just want to go home!
We got out of the house and saw the movie Brave. A nice distraction.
The house had minimal furniture, but Bean was happy to find the "play room". She entertained herself for hours with these blocks!
Tonight is the big Independence Day celebration on post, but it is SO hot, and we are just not in the mood. I am really bummed because this is my favorite holiday!

181 Uuhhhhhh...

This is our house tonight as we were leaving it.
Dark.
The LT and I were heading out of the house to a Hail & Farewell tonight at which he was being... farewelled...(?) He left his job as XO of HHC at the 507th  several weeks ago, so he was invited to this dinner at which the battalion commander was also being ...farewelled...(? there has got to be a better way to say that!) On our way out the door, I went to start the dryer and everything surged and died. The smell of burning plastic filled the air and we went in to panic mode. What had just happened!?
It seemed as though the power was back, yet the dryer wouldn't come on, the a/c groaned and sputtered off, the computer wouldn't turn on (gasp!)... it was trouble.
Since the girls were going to a friend's for the evening anyway, I took them there so they would have a cool place to play. When I returned to the house, a maintenance man was there already. He said there was power coming from the outlets, but something was wrong (duh?). He said that we would probably have to move to a different house (!?).
At that point, there wasn't much we could do while he tried to call people and figure out what to do with us. We had already paid for our meal, so we decided to go to the dinner and gave the guy our number to call us if anything got figured out. Of course it was 6:00 on a Friday night, so people were readily available...(seriously, no one has invented a sarcasm font yet?)
The dinner was lovely, although the whole time I was worried about coming home to a house burnt to the ground. The battalion commander had some great things to say about the LT. There were several other LTs leaving and he said things like "Thanks for your hard work, good luck with your next endeavor." But for my LT, he talked about how smart he is, what a great golfer he is (the BC took him to a charity event a few months ago and they had a great time), that had been promoted to the "A-Team" working in the CG's office and that he is doing such great things he's only in the army as charity work. Pretty great praise from a Lieutenant Colonel. He also coined him with one of the coolest coins I've seen!
But I digress...
We got a call towards the end of the evening stating that the housing office would be putting us up in a hotel, and to call and speak to the woman who had booked it.
On the way home, the LT called the woman to find that they had booked us at a Holiday Inn. I checked the reviews and most of them were pretty negative. He called to see if they could put us somewhere else, and asked if they were even pet friendly and she didn't know. We went home, got the girls, packed a few things, and the LT went ahead to check out the hotel while I took Bean's clothes to a friend's house so I could actually dry them (mind you, it's 10:00 at this point).
Once he got to the hotel, they told him that the reservation had been cancelled. Great. The LT tried to call the woman from housing, but he couldn't get hold of her...
So he found the only other pet friendly hotel that we were willing to stay at and booked a room there. We finally got the girls in bed by 11:00.
And now we try to sleep and see what tomorrow brings!

180 Gross

Tonight as I was coming in from retiring the colors I happened to notice this:
These little beetles got trapped between a hole in the screen on our door and the glass. I am thankful that glass is there!

178 Pocket Full of...

One of my biggest fears/pet peeves is gum or chapstick in the washer. It has been a long time since that has happened because I diligently check pockets as I put clothes in the washer.
I had a lot of laundry to catch up on today after our trip, and I checked pockets as I did so.
As I was putting a load in the dryer, I panicked because I spotted a green stringy thing stuck to my wrist.
It looked exactly like gum.
I frantically pulled everything out of the dryer and started checking each item for signs of sticky. My new favorite shirt? Green goo. I went to pull it of and discovered that it came off easily, could it be gum?
I continued my checking and then I came to the LT's board shorts. In both pockets, I found this:
Suddenly, I recalled him mentioning that after swimming in the ocean he was covered in seaweed. I had found bits of it in the girls' hair as well. The seaweed in FL looks slimy and goopy but if you pick it up it is stringy. It is seaweed like I have never seen before.
So, mystery solved.
A yucky souvenir from heaven.

177 Worth the Wait

Five Guys opened today! Since our company was headed home :( we stopped for lunch with them before they headed up to the airport.
We have been eagerly awating the opening of this place since we found out it was being built. There is a severe lack of places we love to eat here in Columbus.
Now we wait for a Chipotle!

176 Rained Out

We were really hoping to get back to the beach today, but Tropical Storm Debby had other plans. It started raining around 9am, and promised to do so for the next few days. We were pretty bummed that we couldn't sit in the sand a little longer, but are thankful for the time we had there!

173 Volleyball

Auntie E took the girls out to play volleyball. They had a lot of fun, but it was tricky trying to keep the ball from rolling into the poison ivy!

172 Patience Pays Off

Bean spotted this bow and arrow set in the summer Target catalog several weeks ago. Unfortunately for her, the Brave toys weren't out yet. She has absolutely no intention of seeing the movie. She just thinks bows are cool.
She had gotten some money from grandmas, and the tooth fairy, and was saving it for when the set made it to the store. Every time we went to Target, she had to check. Then she lost her wallet, and was bummed that she couldn't find her money.
Finally, the last time we were at Target, we spotted the Brave toys on an end cap, but alas, no bow set.
This past week, she found her wallet! (In her shopping cart of course!)
Today we were at Target again, and no bow. She was looking at all of the little My Little Ponies and other toys that she wanted to buy. I reminded her that she was saving her money for the bow. She sadly agreed and walked away.
Just in case, the DQ checked the Disney princess aisle, and lo and behold, on the bottom shelf with all of the other princesses, was this set.
Bean was beyond thrilled. She thanked her sister for finding it. She proudly carried it to the check out and paid for it all by herself. She was all smiles on the way home.
I kept asking her "Doesn't it feel good to know that you held on to your money so you could buy what you really wanted?" I think she got tired of me asking, but I wanted her to understand that patience is a very important thing to have. Especially when it comes to money!

We are SO happy to have them here!

170 Sick and Tired...

...of being sick!
Bean and I have had some sinus junk for about a week now. It hit the DQ all of the sudden today, worse than we've had it. She had a fever and was miserable all day.
I gave her the rest of this tonight, it usually works wonders.
Hopefully she is better tomorrow because we have family coming in town!

166 Flag Day

I figured that since we live on an army post, and one of us actually serves in the army, we neede a flag. I kept putting it off, telling myself that once we move to a real duty station we'd get one. And then of course, I read this blog post and totally agreed with her reasons not to have a flag, so we haven't had one.
But it seems like our time here is never ending, and rather than waiting for a day that may never exist (we can't live here forever, right!?) and enjoying every day, even if that means we have to unscrew a bracket before we move, I bought a flag.
I was so excited to come home and hang it, only to discover that the one post on our porch is steel, unlike the other houses that have 3 wooden posts.
So no flag that day.
The next day, I was so smart and I went to the hardware store and bought 2 metal drilling drill bits (ok, I wasn't SO smart because I forgot to bring the screws with me to know what size to get), and I borrowed the neighbor's drill again, and the LT went out to hang it aaaannd... the bits were too small.
No flag that day.
Today I found a set of black oxide drill bits in various sizes, dead set on hanging that flag today, on FLAG DAY of all days. And of course as soon as I got home, we got hit with a mocro-burst and it poured down rain for an hour or so.
Finally the LT was able to go out, and after much hard work drilled 3 large holes into the thick steel and got that flag hung. I was SO happy.
It really makes my heart swell to see that dancing in the breeze.
And then it rained again. So I had to take it down.
But I can proudly say that we had a flag hanging from our home for at least an hour on flag day.

165 Goodbye Grandma!

Sadly, my mom had to return home today.
We were so blessed to have her come and stay with us and we had a wonderful time. We were especially grateful that she could be here for the DQ's birthday!!
I miss her so much already!!

163 Cheeseball

We went to Montgomery today to look around and shop. AND go to Costco. We were all excited to eat there; me for a hot dog, and the girls for pizza.
I told Bean to say cheese and this is what she gave me:
"Cheeeeeeese oh yeah, on my pizza."

162 Twelve

The DQ turned 12 today! I can't believe it!!
She requested banana pudding and after totally messing up the first batch, I was able to whip up another one that didn't taste too bad.
We love this girl so much!!
Happy birthday DQ!!

161 NIM Trip

It wouldn't be a visit to Fort Benning without a trip to the National Infantry Museum!
My mom enjoyed it, and so did the girls. It was the DQ's first time there too!

160 Southern Exposure

We took my mom on the obligatory Ranger Burger dinner run.
We indtroduced her to the south's fried pickles.
You have to really love pickles to like them.

159 New Kicks

158 Big Day!

Look who's here!! We are SO excited to have my mom here for a week. Yay!!!
The girls and I drove up to Atlanta to pick her up. On the way up, the LT called and said his company commander was planning to do a night jump tonight at 2000 and we could head out there as soon as we got back from the airport.
We made it in the nick of time out to the DZ (drop zone). She invited us out to the PI (point of impact). We had to ride out there in Gcar, couldn't take the POV (personally owned vehicle...comfused yet?)
It was so cool to go out there where the soldiers actually land. The girls were super happy to have grandma out there and grandma got a whilrwind welcome to army life!

157 The Good Life

We hit up the pool this morning. It was pretty much empty, which was pretty much awesome.
The DQ had a friend spend the night in anticipation of being stuck at the pool with a bunch of little ones. They swam a little and then just lounged by the pool enjoying their summer.

156 One of Those Days

Today was one of those days that wasn't terrible, but it seemed nothing was going my way.
It started when the LT got out of the shower and said "Oh crap. My watch just died." The nice, expensive army watch that was a gift when he was comissioned died.
The watch that I replaced the battery in the other day...oh wait. Whoops. I didn't get the back screwed on tight enough and it got water in it.
Awesome.
Most of the day turned out like that. Nothing as major as breaking the watch, but just enough to frustrate me.
And then there was the time today that I wanted to print a large family photo to hang in the house.
I chose a huge size, 20x24, and was so proud of myself because I checked ahead of time to make sure that the big frames were half off at Hobby Lobby.
So we went to Sam's to pick up our huge picture. I was pretty proud of the picture too, because the resolution was great.
Then I got to Hobby Lobby only to find that the largest frames they have are 16x20. Whoops again.
The Sam's app on my phone wouldn't let me print more than an 8x10, so I called the watch-less LT at work and he was able to put in another order for me so I could pick it up while I was still in town.
I made sure to tell him to check the crop on it so that it was centered. He said at first, it cut him off, then he was able to center it.
I went back to Sam's Club, and surprise, surprise, the photo was ready 30 minutes early! As soon as we got home, I raced to put it in the frame, only to realize...
it still wasn't centered.

It is framed, and I will hang it. And perhaps some day, I will print another one (it only cost me 5 bucks) but I don't know what to do with this one. I hate to throw it away!
I ended up finding a boring black poster frame for the bigger photo and the LT wants it for his wall in his office.

And I left his watch in a bag of rice all day to dry it out, and do you know what?

it worked

154 Why We Only Have One Small Dog

We went to the LT's commander's son's birthday party today. It was at her brother's house. Needless to say, we hardly knew anyone.
We still had a good time and the food was delish.
The owners of the house (I'm still not exactly sure which ones they were...) had two dogs that were constantly begging for food. They couldn't leave them in the house while we were outside because they would find a way to get food off the table and eat it all.
Bean was trying to eat a hog dog, and they stood there the whole time expectantly waiting for her to share. It was pretty funny, but I think she was more annoyed.

153 Home

The DQ came home from camp today. She was exhausted and full of stories. She said it was "the happiest week of my life."
I am so glad she got to go. And no back injuries!
